Agnes Scott Events, Shout-outs

The 39th Annual Writers’ Festival is Upon Us!

Agnes Scott’s annual Writers’ Festival is in its 39th year, and I’m excited to announce the Festival’s first-ever student-run blog! Thanks to Bhumi Patel (’12) for keeping it up.

This Festival holds a special place in my heart because it combines three things I love dearly: writing, design, and Agnes Scott. Even though several poems I’ve written were not chosen to be published in the magazine (as lovely as they were!), I’ve had the opportunity to help design the print promotional materials and Magazine for four years now. Last year’s cover design was especially fun–the three of us in Dana Design did an exquisite corpse with the theme of dead birds, a play on subversion of the trendy graphic birds you see on everything now (example: Blue Bird journal designed by SCAD students for Barnes & Noble).

The front cover became this:

And the back:

Olivia and I have a design blog for this year’s Festival: check it out here.

The guests this year are Scott Russell Sanders, who’s also teaching a two-week course on sustainability (of course, after I graduate!), poet Paul Guest (who also has a blog), and Agnes Scott’s own Sarah Scoles (’07).

I took this picture of Sarah way back when (possibly for the campus newspaper, The Profile). I wonder now if it was perhaps foreshadowing her writing success... She's posing with Robert Frost, a good friend of ol' Agnes (really--our campus is just that inspirational!)

Here’s to an excellent Festival!

  1. Last year’s examination of birds (Dana design research for the 38th Writers’ festival) was a hoot (ha!). I loved watching that unfold–especially enjoyed the dead bird costume that Hadley made and wore. I wish everyone could spend some time with a gal in a dead bird costume. Sigh.
